George Stephanopoulos, a longtime Democratic insider and former Bill Clinton adviser, conducted an interview that seemed more like an intervention on Friday night.
Instead of pressing President Biden on his mental acuity and how it affects our relationships with other countries, Stephanopoulos repeatedly questioned whether Biden truly believes he can defeat Donald Trump.
“Biden, Biden, Biden,” Biden responded dismissively to each question.
Nothing in Biden’s demeanor or responses reassured viewers. He refused to take a cognitive test or undergo an independent medical examination.
He claimed his proof of mental sharpness was his job creation record, a claim many find hard to believe.
There was talk of saving the computer chip industry and NATO, followed by uncertain statements.
Stephanopoulos rightly pointed out that blaming “exhaustion” after a week at Camp David with mid-morning work calls and afternoon naps seemed like a strange excuse.
Biden insisted it was just a bad cold and a rough night, sticking to scripted talking points.
To reassure the public, Biden could have faced tough questions in a longer interview or taken unscripted questions in a press briefing. But he declined, which raises doubts.
When asked about his low poll numbers, Biden simply denied their accuracy, surprising Stephanopoulos and many Democrats.
Is Biden in denial, or struggling with cognitive decline? Either way, his fitness for office is in question, and he’s displaying a stubbornness akin to a grumpy old man.
Even Biden himself said he would step aside if the Lord Almighty told him to, but that’s not happening.
Come November, voters will deliver their verdict, and it looks like Democrats are in for a tough time.
