Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, facing a primary election challenge in New York, attended a rally in Las Vegas, Nevada, to support Joe Biden and Kamala Harris as defenders of abortion rights.
Ocasio-Cortez told the crowd that she and her supporters are crucial to saving American democracy. She criticized the conservative Supreme Court and former President Donald Trump, saying, “We do not consent.”
She emphasized the importance of the November elections, calling Nevada the next battleground and urging people to defeat Trump and support Biden and Harris.
Ocasio-Cortez shared that her mother chose to keep her pregnancy after an ultrasound, highlighting the importance of choice in reproductive decisions.
The crowd cheered when a state Democratic Party chair called Trump a “criminal,” and one person shouted, “Lock him up.”
Alexis Gonzalez-Black, a partner at August Public, spoke about her own abortion, saying it saved her life.
Notably, no members of Nevada’s mostly Democrat Congressional delegation attended the rally.
Christine Thomas of the Veterans Advocacy Council stressed the need for reproductive health representation and praised the Biden-Harris administration for understanding women’s and LGBTQ needs.
Democrat Peter Kulkin suggested that Ocasio-Cortez might have scheduled the event after her primary challenge to avoid it impacting her campaign.
The event took place at the Fremont Country Club, where Ocasio-Cortez was greeted by a mariachi band playing traditional music.
