GOP Grossly Outnumbered Among Detroit Poll Watchers, 7 to 1: Lawsuit

The Republican Party has filed a lawsuit against Detroit, claiming that the city has not followed Michigan law by hiring an equal number of Democratic and Republican election inspectors.

According to Michigan law, election officials must appoint nearly equal numbers of poll watchers from each major political party in every precinct. However, Republicans say this hasn’t happened in Detroit.

The lawsuit points out that Detroit has 2,337 Democratic poll watchers but only 310 Republicans. In Wayne County, which includes Detroit, a survey of 335 precincts showed that 202 had no Republican poll watchers at all.

Detroit has had very few Republican officials, with the last one serving in the 1990s. The lawsuit argues that the city has not properly recruited or hired Republican poll watchers.

It also claims that Paula Gnacke-Nemeth, a former chair of a Wayne County congressional district, gave election officials a list of 675 potential Republican poll watchers. But out of the 310 Republican poll watchers, only 52 came from this list.

The lawsuit, filed in state court, asks the Wayne County Circuit Court to order Detroit officials to follow the law and balance the number of Democratic and Republican poll watchers.
